We attended a property in Bristol where the sockets kept tripping out.
After carrying out some testing, we found two sections of cable with low insulation resistance readings, so we knew we had faults on those cables.
We replaced the faulty sections, tested everything again and then found another problem.
The strange thing was, one minute we'd get a satisfactory reading and then test it again and the reading would drop.
This is one of the difficult things with intermittent electrical faults.
Most cables are hidden behind walls or underneath floors, so we can't physically see what's happening to them. We have to use our test equipment and experience to work out where the problem is.
In this case, there are signs of corrosion to some of the back boxes, so moisture could have played a part. There's also older cabling running underneath the floor which could potentially have been damaged at some point.
We've now got a plan to bypass the remaining suspect cables with new wiring rather than keep relying on the older sections.
It's been a tricky one, but I actually enjoy jobs like this. Fault finding is a big part of what we do at Fairway Electrical.
