Why Kitchen Electrics Need To Be Done Properly Before The Tiles Go On

Kitchen electrics are one of those jobs where it really does pay to get things done properly at the right stage.

Once the kitchen is finished, the units are in, the worktops are fitted and the tiles are on the wall, everything becomes much harder to access.

I recently came across a good example of this on a kitchen job. There was wiring and a connection behind where the tiles were going to be fitted. At first glance, to a customer, it might not have looked like a big issue. It was hidden in the wall, the tiles were going over it, and once finished you would never know it was there.

But that is exactly the problem.

If something is not right behind the tiles, it does not stop being a problem just because it is covered up.

Luckily, I spotted it before the customer tiled over it and was able to sort it properly. If it had been left and caused a fault later on, the tiles would likely have had to come off just to get back to the wiring.

That could mean damaged tiles, extra labour, extra cost, and a lot of unnecessary hassle.

Hidden kitchen electrics still need to be safe

A kitchen has a lot going on electrically.

You might have sockets, ovens, hobs, extractors, dishwashers, washing machines, fridges, under-cupboard lighting, boilers, isolators and appliance supplies all in one room.

Because there is often a lot packed into a small space, kitchen wiring needs to be planned and installed properly.

The important thing is that electrical connections should not just be buried behind tiles and forgotten about. If a connection ever needs inspection, testing, maintenance or repair, it needs to be done in a way that is suitable and accessible where required.

It is much better to deal with these things while the wall is still open than after the kitchen is finished.

The problem with covering things up

Tiles can make a kitchen look lovely, but they also hide everything behind them.

If poor wiring, loose connections or unsuitable joints are tiled over, the problem is now hidden. You might not know anything is wrong until something starts tripping, stops working, smells hot, or causes damage.

By that point, fault finding becomes much more difficult.

Instead of simply checking the wiring, you might be looking at removing tiles, damaging the wall, cutting access holes, or taking parts of the kitchen apart.

That is why I always think kitchen electrics should be checked and sorted before the final finish goes on.

It is not about making the job more complicated. It is about avoiding problems later.

A small issue now can become a big issue later

On this job, I could see it was not right before it got covered over.

That meant it could be sorted properly there and then.

If it had been left behind the tiles, it may have worked for a while. It might even have seemed fine when the kitchen was finished.

But if it failed later, the customer would have had a much bigger problem.

This is the bit people do not always see with kitchen electrics. The job is not just about getting power to a socket or making an appliance work. It is about making sure it has been done safely, tested properly, and left in a way that makes sense for the future.

Kitchen alterations are the perfect time to check the electrics

If you are having a kitchen altered, it is a really good time to look at the electrics properly.

Before the walls are tiled and before everything is boxed in, an electrician can check things like:

  • Are the sockets in the right place?
  • Are the appliance supplies suitable?
  • Are there any hidden joints or poor connections?
  • Is the oven or hob supply suitable?
  • Do you need extra sockets?
  • Are the circuits protected properly?
  • Are old cables or accessories being covered up?
  • Will everything still be accessible once the kitchen is finished?

It is far easier to sort these things before the tiler starts.

Once the tiles are on, even a small change can become awkward and expensive.

Why kitchens need a bit more thought

Kitchens are not like every other room in the house.

They usually have more appliances, more load, more heat, more moisture, and more things built in or hidden away.

That is why planning matters.

For example, an oven, hob, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer all need to be thought about properly. You also need to think about where isolation switches go, where sockets are placed, and whether anything will be trapped behind units or tiles.

It is very easy for kitchen electrics to become messy if they are added to bit by bit over the years.

A socket gets moved here, an appliance gets added there, a cable gets joined, then eventually it all gets hidden behind a new kitchen.

That is why, when I work on kitchen electrics in Norwich, I would rather take the time to check what is already there before it all gets covered up.

“It worked before” does not always mean it is right

This is something I hear quite often.

“It has always worked.”

And that might be true.

But just because something has worked for years does not always mean it is safe, suitable, or a good idea to cover it over.

Older wiring, poor connections, DIY alterations and hidden joints can all sit unnoticed until something changes.

A kitchen refurbishment is the ideal time to put those things right.

Once the new kitchen is finished, you want to know the electrics behind it have been done properly, not just hidden away.

It can save money in the long run

Getting kitchen electrics checked before tiling might feel like an extra step, but it can save a lot of money and stress later on.

Finding a problem early could mean a simple repair.

Finding it after the tiles are on could mean removing finished work just to access it.

That is the difference.

It is not always the visible parts of the job that matter most. Sometimes the most important work is the bit you will never see again once the kitchen is finished.

FAQs

Should kitchen electrics be checked before tiling?

Yes, it is a good idea. Once tiles are fitted, wiring and connections behind them become much harder to access. If something needs changing or repairing later, the tiles may have to come off.

Can electrical connections be hidden behind kitchen tiles?

Some wiring may be hidden within walls, but connections need to be installed correctly and accessible where required. Poor or unsuitable connections should not just be buried behind tiles and forgotten about.

When should I get an electrician involved in a kitchen renovation?

Ideally, before tiling and before the final finish. This allows sockets, appliance supplies, lighting and any existing issues to be checked and sorted while access is still easy.

Why does my kitchen keep tripping after new appliances are fitted?

It could be a faulty appliance, an overloaded circuit, a problem with the existing wiring, or an issue with how something has been connected. A proper test can help narrow it down.
